TOP 10 STRESS BUSTERS
1. Meditation
Meditating on a regular basis is quite normal and studies have shown that it is very helpful in reducing your stress levels. Studies show that it can also reduce your blood pressure. You can join a local meditation class, listen to a meditation on cd or download one on the computer. You can try one of the modern meditations which are combined with binaural beats to take you into a deep meditative state with no effort on your part.
2. Decrease Your Stress with Proper Nutrition
Many people know that you can change your hormones by taking in drugs or chemicals. Unfortunately many people forget that food plays a big or even bigger role in putting stress on our bodies. Nutrition is important. A proper diet will go a long way to reducing your stress levels. Often when we are stressed we eat junk food to comfort ourselves. Be careful of your diet, drink plenty of water, cut back on the sugar, caffeine and alcohol. All these will go a long way to helping your body naturally, reducing the stresses and strains it has to deal with.
3. Get some exercise
Studies show that even 15 minutes of sustained exercise can be beneficial in releasing feel good endorphins. You can get up 15 minutes earlier and take a walk. The morning sunshine is also great for getting your circadian rhythm on track. It’s important that you give your body exercise daily - powerful “happiness” drugs start getting created by your body. These endorphins are produced by your body and will help you to feel happier completely naturally. Take a break at lunch and sneak in 15 more minutes of exercise. Think of exercise as a reward not a punishment!
4. Get a good night’s sleep
Quite often when we’re stressed, we’ll literally lie awake at night worrying. It’s important to get enough sleep as this is the time your body uses to repair and renovate itself. Don’t use alcohol as a night cap - this actually makes your sleep patterns worse. Instead, adjust your habits so that you give yourself time to unwind before you go to bed. Don’t stay up too late reading those business reports. Taking a long, relaxing bath before you go to bed is one way to naturally encourage your body to go to sleep. A great way to lull yourself to sleep may not be counting sheep but thinking of different colors for animals, blue zebras and green monkeys, pink horses and orange elephants might be enough to get your mind out of the busy think mode into the relaxed sleep mode.
5. Get a massage
Massage therapy has become so popular that you see more and more opening up everywhere. Many people that are stressed tend to hold their stress in certain muscles of their bodies. This tension can even lead to headaches or migraines. Having a professional massage will not only make you fell relaxed and stress free but also give your body the overall feeling of wellness.
6. Change your routine
Variety is the spice of life! If certain things are stressing you out, consider changing your routine to lessen their impact. For instance, if your work place offers you a range of times to start work, adjust your daily commute so that you miss the worst of the traffic. If one of your co-workers constantly stresses you out, talk to your boss to see whether you can be split away from them or explore other ways to reduce the tension between you. Leave your work at work and be sure to work hard and play hard, too!
7. Take a vacation
Even a weekend away will help. They say a change is as good as a break and a couple days away from your regular routine could make all the difference. Taking a short break will allow you time to recharge yourself and let the stress drain away.
8. Get a hobby
Hobbies are a good way to change the direction your mind takes. Whether your hobby is gardening, an art, or a craft, make time to do it at least once a week. Join organization, leagues, or clubs that have regular meetings so that you can be around people that have the same interests in common.
9. Talk it over
Having a good friend to talk things over can really benefit your ability in dealing with stress. Seeing things from a neutral perspective may help you realize that you are stressing over situations that are beyond your control and the friend may be helpful in coming up with solutions that you have not even thought about yourself.
10. Laugh More
Laughter may still be the best medicine! Laughter is responsible for turning on hormones in the body which help decrease pain receptors. Laughter also stimulates natural immune boosting hormones. Laughter is so effective that many progressive hospitals are including laughter therapy as part of their rehab program and are noticing incredible results with the speed of recovery and the decreased need for pain medication. Go ahead grab a funny movie or a funny friend and laugh for the health of it!
